In a striking turn of events, a prominent British jeweller with a history spanning 47 years has entered administration, leading to significant job losses. The family-owned jewellery retailer, C W Sellors, renowned for its exquisite collections, has confirmed that it will be making 36 staff members redundant as part of this process.
Founded in 1979, C W Sellors has been a staple on the high streets of the North of England and the Midlands, boasting ten retail locations in cities such as Whitby, York, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock, and Shrewsbury. However, in early January 2026, the firm faced financial difficulties and appointed joint administrators from the business advisory firm BDO—Lee Causer and Ben Peterson—to oversee its operations.
This decision came after a series of challenges, including cash flow issues exacerbated by rising costs and a decline in consumer spending attributed to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Despite efforts to innovate through investments in new manufacturing and training facilities, the company reported a turnover decrease from £30.4 million to £28.5 million in the year ending April 2024, highlighting the tough market conditions.
BDO announced that the consolidation of all C W Sellors' stores in Whitby into a single location, known as W Hamond, has led to the closure of four shops. Nevertheless, the remaining outlets will continue to operate as usual, which raises questions about the sustainability of such a model moving forward.
Lee Causer, one of the administrators, expressed regret over the layoffs, stating, "The business has been experiencing challenging trading conditions, with rising overheads and lower demand for its high-end products." He added that the remaining 50 employees would stay on temporarily to help manage the business while a buyer is sought, sparking curiosity about what the future holds for this storied brand.
C W Sellors has positioned itself as a leading independent jeweller, offering luxurious items crafted from exquisite materials, including diamond and gemstone jewellery featuring unique UK stones like Derbyshire Blue John and Whitby Jet. The retailer has also partnered with prestigious brands such as IWC Schaffhausen, Breitling, TAG Heuer, Gucci, Longines, Montblanc, Oris, and Bremont.
Currently, a notice on their official website indicates that while the business remains operational, online orders cannot be processed at this time. However, customers can still visit physical locations in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Shrewsbury, Matlock, York, and Whitby to place orders in person. The statement concludes with an appreciative note, thanking patrons for their understanding and support during this challenging period.
As the story unfolds, many are left wondering: What does this mean for the future of traditional retail in a rapidly changing market? Will other long-standing businesses face similar fates? Share your thoughts below!
