Turning a Familiar Unreal Environment Into a Winter Wonderland: One Artist’s Bold Take on the UE5 Sample Scene
What happens when a moody, ancient ruin gets a winter makeover? That’s exactly what 3D artist and Unreal Engine fan Tore Lervik set out to explore—and the result is turning heads in the digital art community.
Lervik recently unveiled his latest project, a creative reinterpretation of the well-known FAB sample scene. Originally designed as the Dark Ruins Megascans Sample—a brooding, fantasy-style environment—the artist completely transformed it into a serene, snowy landscape that radiates festive charm. But here’s where it gets interesting: the magic wasn’t just in the textures or lighting. It was powered by a combination of clever tools, both community favorites and custom-built innovations.
To achieve this frosty transformation, Lervik relied on two key plugins: MeshBlend and EasySnow. Among these, MeshBlend stands out as a unique creation—the artist’s very own custom tool. It’s designed to blend different 3D meshes seamlessly, removing the usually tedious process of manual adjustments. In fact, this plugin has already gained industry recognition, having been used in the development of Subnautica 2 to sculpt immersive world elements.
MeshBlend has seen several updates recently, with its newer versions expanding its blending capabilities and simplifying workflows for Unreal Engine 5 users. Essentially, it allows artists to merge different models in a natural, almost organic way—think of how snow might pile up around rocks or structures without looking artificial. Its results speak for themselves in Lervik’s winter-themed reimagining.

But here’s the question many are debating: does transforming a pre-existing sample scene into something seasonal diminish its originality, or does it highlight the artist’s creativity in repurposing existing assets? Drop your thoughts below—should reimagining be seen as innovation or reinterpretation?
