The men's race is already generating buzz, and for good reason. All eyes will be on Thailand's Puripol Boonson and Indonesia's Lalu Muhammad Zohri, the two fastest men in the region this year.
Boonson, still just 19 years old, is a force to be reckoned with. He holds the Thai record of 10.06, achieved in 2023, and boasts Southeast Asia's fastest time this year at 10.15. That's blazing speed!
With Malaysia's Muhd Azeem Fahmi, the second-fastest man in the region, missing the Games, Zohri becomes the next favorite. The 25-year-old Indonesian has a personal best of 10.03 from 2019, though his fastest race this year clocked in at 10.21. It's going to be a close one!
Keep an eye out for Singapore's Marc Brian Louis (10.31) and Malaysia's Jonathan Nyepa (10.40), who are also expected to make a splash in the field of 14 runners.
In the women's 100m, Singapore's Veronica Shanti Pereira is the clear frontrunner. She's fresh off winning a silver medal at both the 2023 Asian Championships and the Asian Games. The Bangkok stadium holds special significance for her, as it's where she clinched her continental title and set her personal best and Singaporean national record of 11.20.
Her season's best of 11.40 puts her well ahead of her rivals. The Philippines' Zion Corrales-Nelson (11.52) is her closest challenger, with teammate Kristina Marie Knott (11.56) also in contention.
