A major traffic disruption is underway on the M5 motorway in Somerset, with diversion routes in place for an extended period. This situation has been ongoing for over 12 hours, causing significant delays and affecting commuters and travelers alike.
The cause of this disruption is a serious crash that occurred on Sunday night, as confirmed by Avon and Somerset Police. The incident, which took place between junctions 20 and 21, has led to the closure of the motorway in both directions.
But here's where it gets controversial... The police's presence at the scene has sparked curiosity and raised questions. While investigations are ongoing, the exact nature of the crash and any potential controversies remain unknown.
For northbound drivers, the recommended diversion route involves following the Solid Triangle symbol. You'll need to exit at J21, navigate through Bristol via the A370, and then rejoin the M5 at J18.
Southbound travelers, on the other hand, should look for the Hollow Circle symbol. The route takes you off at J18, through a series of roads including the A4, A3070, A4174, and A38, before rejoining the motorway at J22.
And this is the part most people miss... There's an alternative route for cars and lighter vehicles. Instead of exiting at J18, you can continue southbound until J19, then take the A369 to Leigh Woods, and from there, follow the A370, A4174, and A38 to J22.
This diversion is expected to remain in place for several more hours, so plan your journey accordingly.
