Auditor Slams Hamilton's Outdoor Shelter Project: Taxpayers Absorb Fallout

The project's history is marred by delays and budget overruns. Initially estimated at $2.8 million, the capital costs soared to $7.9 million, a $5.1 million increase. This was partly due to the city's decision to purchase MicroShelters' tiny homes without proper research or due diligence. The OAG criticizes the city's lack of basic due diligence, allowing Microshelters to overpromise and underdeliver, leading to costly modifications.
The audit's findings are grouped into themes such as insufficient research, inadequate planning, and a failure to communicate with the city council. The OAG recommends that the city learn from these lessons, improve future projects, and address the issues raised. The city is now under pressure to respond to the recommendations and report back to the audit committee by July.
