"I entered wrestling at 23 with a body already battered from my time in college football and powerlifting. I knew the day of reckoning would come."
In an exclusive interview with The Takedown on SI, Big E revealed that his decision to retire was made almost immediately after the neck injury. He had a 'Jefferson Fracture,' a severe break in the C1 vertebra, which doctors warned could have long-term consequences.
"The doctor begged me to reconsider, even if I was cleared to return. His concern was a clear sign to me that it was time to hang up the boots."
And this is the part most people miss: Big E's decision wasn't just about his own health. It was a reflection of the broader wrestling industry and the sacrifices made by veterans and legends.
"Around WrestleMania, you see the true cost of success. Legends, not even old by regular standards, are struggling with pain, barely able to walk without assistance. It's a sobering reality check."
Big E's journey began in 2009 when he signed with WWE, becoming an eight-time tag team champion with The New Day and eventually winning the WWE Championship. But the pandemic and its aftermath brought a new perspective. He saw the toll on his peers and knew it was time to prioritize his health over the glitz and glory of wrestling.
"I love my career, I love being an athlete, but I wasn't willing to gamble with my long-term health anymore."
