Emily Barbour and her boyfriend, Stephen Browne, were at Middle Cove Beach to enjoy the waves when they joined a woman and her son. In an instant, a large, sudden wave slammed onto the shore, sweeping the mother and child into the icy surf.
“Out of nowhere, a bigger wave rolled in, and we started running. I heard her screaming, and when I turned around, she was already in the water with a frantic look on her face. I grabbed her and we rushed her to shore as fast as we could.”
Emily later described how the sea’s sudden surge quickly overwhelmed the beach, pulling the mother and her child into the churning water. Thanks to the couple’s quick actions, the woman and her son remained wet and shaken but were otherwise uninjured. They stayed close on the sand to warm up and eventually managed to get back to their car and home.
Barbour emphasizes how close they came to a far grimmer outcome, saying she can’t imagine what might have happened if they hadn’t been there to help.
“I’m just grateful, and we thank God we were there to assist.”
