Hold on to your hats, folks, because a viral video claiming to show President William Ruto being chased by a rhino is actually a clever fake! The Star has confirmed that this dramatic footage is entirely AI-generated. This revelation comes after a real, albeit brief, moment of tension during the launch of the Tsavo West Rhino Conservation Sanctuary on Tuesday. But here's where it gets interesting...
The AI-generated video depicts a man, seemingly President Ruto, in the same attire as he wore at the launch, frantically fleeing from a rhino. The man is even shown on the ground. However, the actual event footage tells a different story. Real videos show President Ruto, alongside Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano and other guests, safely positioned on a raised platform, behind a truck, with rangers nearby. The rhino couldn't reach them from any angle.
So, what actually happened? Reports indicate a newly freed rhino unexpectedly turned towards the platform where the President and other officials were standing. This caused a moment of surprise, prompting the President to exclaim, “Inataka fujo,” which translates to “It is looking for trouble.” The guests then shared a laugh and applause as the rhino retreated into the bushes.
This incident took place at the unveiling of the sanctuary, which is now the largest rhino sanctuary globally, spanning over 3,200 square kilometers. This sanctuary is a significant step towards Kenya's long-term conservation goals. The aim is to reach 1,450 rhinos by 2030 and 2,000 rhinos by 2037.
For years, the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, at only 92 square kilometers, has housed nearly 150 black rhinos, exceeding its ecological capacity. This overcrowding has led to limited breeding, increased territorial conflicts, reduced calf survival, and significant stress on the animals. This highlights the importance of the new sanctuary.
